About Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss on the scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, or elsewhere on the body. In more extensive forms it can cause loss of all scalp hair (alopecia totalis) or all body hair (alopecia universalis).
Hair loss has many possible causes, so a careful dermatology evaluation is important before starting any treatment. Our team helps distinguish alopecia areata from other causes such as androgenetic (pattern) hair loss, telogen effluvium, scarring alopecias, and nutritional or thyroid-related shedding.
Symptoms & signs to watch for
Common signs that may suggest alopecia areata include:
- Round or oval patches of hair loss on the scalp or beard
- Sudden shedding in a defined area without obvious scarring
- Nail pitting or ridging in some patients
- Loss of eyebrow or eyelash hair
- Episodes of regrowth followed by new patches
- Family history of autoimmune disease in some cases
Treatment approach
Treatment depends on the pattern, severity, and duration of hair loss and on individual goals. Several options can stimulate regrowth, though no treatment works for every patient and recurrences are common.
Treatment options your provider may discuss:
- Topical, intralesional, or oral corticosteroids
- Topical minoxidil and contact immunotherapy in selected cases
- Newer oral JAK inhibitors approved for severe alopecia areata
- Evaluation for related autoimmune or thyroid conditions when appropriate
- Hair-loss-specific scalp exam (trichoscopy) and biopsy if diagnosis is unclear
- Emotional support resources and referrals when needed
Not every option is appropriate for every patient. Your dermatology provider will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual evaluation.
When to see a dermatologist
Schedule an evaluation if you notice sudden patchy hair loss, rapid widespread shedding, loss of eyebrow or eyelash hair, or any hair loss that is affecting your wellbeing.
