About Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a long-term condition in which the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin are damaged or destroyed, leading to smooth, well-defined patches of lighter skin that may slowly grow, stay stable, or (less commonly) repigment. Vitiligo can affect any part of the body and is often most noticeable on the face, hands, around the eyes and mouth, and over joints.
Vitiligo is not contagious. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, and our team coordinates appropriate screening when indicated.
Symptoms & signs to watch for
Common signs that may suggest vitiligo include:
- Smooth, milky-white or lighter patches of skin
- Loss of pigment around eyes, mouth, hands, elbows, knees, or genitals
- Premature whitening of scalp, brow, beard, or eyelash hair
- Patches that may slowly enlarge or appear in new areas
- Sunburn-prone areas where pigment has been lost
- In some cases, recent depigmentation after a skin injury (Koebner phenomenon)
Treatment approach
Treatment goals are individualized. Some patients want active repigmentation, while others want to stabilize the condition or focus on sun protection and camouflage. Several effective options now exist.
Treatment options your provider may discuss:
- Topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors
- Topical JAK inhibitor therapy approved for nonsegmental vitiligo
- Phototherapy referrals where appropriate
- Sun protection counseling to prevent burns in depigmented skin
- Cosmetic camouflage options and skin-tone counseling
- Screening for associated thyroid or autoimmune conditions when indicated
Not every option is appropriate for every patient. Your dermatology provider will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual evaluation.
When to see a dermatologist
Schedule an evaluation if you notice new or spreading lighter patches of skin, especially on the face, hands, or around the eyes and mouth. Early treatment may improve the chances of repigmentation.
