About Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic facial skin condition that most commonly causes redness, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps across the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. It typically affects adults (especially those with fair skin) and can wax and wane with triggers such as sun exposure, heat, alcohol, spicy foods, stress, and certain skincare products.
Rosacea has several subtypes that can overlap, including persistent redness and flushing, papulopustular (acne-like) rosacea, thickened skin (rhinophyma) most often on the nose, and ocular rosacea affecting the eyes.
Symptoms & signs to watch for
Common signs that may suggest rosacea include:
- Persistent facial redness or flushing
- Visible small blood vessels (telangiectasias)
- Acne-like papules or pustules on the central face
- Burning, stinging, or skin sensitivity
- Watery, gritty, or irritated eyes
- Thickened skin texture, most often on the nose
Treatment approach
There is no single cure for rosacea, but most patients can achieve major and lasting improvement with a combination of trigger management, gentle skincare, and targeted prescription therapy.
Treatment options your provider may discuss:
- Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and barrier-friendly skincare
- Topical metronidazole, ivermectin, azelaic acid, or brimonidine
- Oral antibiotics (often low-dose doxycycline) for inflammatory rosacea
- Laser and intense pulsed light treatments for redness and visible vessels
- Eye drops and lid hygiene for ocular involvement
- Trigger identification and lifestyle adjustments
Not every option is appropriate for every patient. Your dermatology provider will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual evaluation.
When to see a dermatologist
Consider an evaluation if facial redness is persistent or worsening, if acne-like bumps don't respond to typical acne care, if your eyes are frequently irritated, or if rosacea is affecting your daily life or self-image.
