Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment in Wasilla & Anchorage, AK

Long-term control of dandruff, scalp flaking, and facial redness.

About Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic skin condition that causes flaking, redness, and itching in oil-rich areas of the body, most often the scalp (where milder forms are commonly called dandruff), eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, mid-chest, and skin folds. It can affect infants (cradle cap) but is most often seen in teens and adults.

Flares are typically driven by an interaction between skin oil, a normally present yeast called Malassezia, and individual immune response. Cold, dry Alaska winters can make flaking and itching noticeably worse.

Symptoms & signs to watch for

Common signs that may suggest seborrheic dermatitis include:

  • White or yellow greasy scales on the scalp, eyebrows, or beard
  • Red, flaky patches around the nose or ears
  • Itching or burning in affected areas
  • Dandruff that returns after over-the-counter shampoos
  • Worsening with cold weather, stress, or illness
  • Flaking inside the ears or in the chest hair area

Treatment approach

Seborrheic dermatitis is highly manageable with the right routine. Most patients control flares with medicated shampoos, gentle skincare, and short courses of topical anti-inflammatory or antifungal therapy.

Treatment options your provider may discuss:

  • Medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole, ciclopirox, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or coal tar
  • Topical antifungal creams for facial and body involvement
  • Short courses of topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors for flares
  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers
  • Long-term maintenance routines to prevent recurrence
  • Differentiation from psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea when overlap is present

Not every option is appropriate for every patient. Your dermatology provider will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual evaluation.

When to see a dermatologist

Schedule an evaluation if over-the-counter dandruff shampoos aren't enough, if you have spreading redness on the face, ears, or chest, or if scalp itching or flaking is affecting daily life.
