About Skin Biopsies & Excisions
A skin biopsy is a short in-office procedure in which a small sample of skin is removed for laboratory analysis to determine the diagnosis of a spot, growth, or rash. Excisions are slightly larger procedures used to remove a confirmed skin cancer, an atypical mole, a cyst, or another lesion that warrants complete removal.
Most biopsies and many excisions can be performed during a routine visit under local anesthesia, with minimal downtime. Our team focuses on accurate diagnosis, careful technique, and clear post-procedure instructions to support healing and minimize scarring.
Symptoms & signs to watch for
Common signs that may suggest skin biopsies & excisions include:
- A suspicious or changing spot that needs a diagnosis
- A confirmed skin cancer that requires complete removal
- An atypical mole flagged at a skin exam
- A cyst, lipoma, or growth that is bothersome or growing
- A persistent rash where the diagnosis is unclear
- A lesion in a cosmetically or functionally sensitive area
Treatment approach
Your provider will choose the biopsy or excision technique that best fits the type of lesion and its location. After numbing the area, the sample or lesion is removed and sent to a dermatopathology lab. Results typically return within a few business days, and you'll be contacted to discuss next steps.
Treatment options your provider may discuss:
- Shave biopsy for superficial lesions
- Punch biopsy for full-thickness sampling
- Excisional biopsy for complete removal with margins
- Standard surgical excision of confirmed skin cancers and atypical moles
- Cyst, lipoma, and benign growth removal
- Coordination with Mohs surgery for selected high-risk cancers in cosmetically sensitive areas
Not every option is appropriate for every patient. Your dermatology provider will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual evaluation.
When to see a dermatologist
Schedule a visit if you have a spot that is new, changing, painful, bleeding, or non-healing, a previously diagnosed lesion that needs removal, or a growth that bothers you cosmetically or functionally.
