Spots that should be checked
See a dermatologist for any spot that is new, changing, bleeding, itching, crusting or not healing after a few weeks, or for a mole that looks different from your others. If something on your skin worries you, it is worth a look. Same-week appointments are often available.
Skin cancers we diagnose and treat
Basal cell carcinoma
The most common skin cancer. It grows slowly and rarely spreads, but it can damage nearby tissue if left untreated.

How we find skin cancer
- Full-body skin exams and mole checks. What happens during a full-body skin exam | Mole checks
- Dermoscopy, a lighted magnifier that shows structures below the skin surface.
- Biopsy, often at the same visit, when a spot needs a closer look under the microscope.

Mohs micrographic surgery
The highest cure rate for many basal and squamous cell carcinomas, with the most healthy tissue preserved. Performed by Dr. Andrew Dorizas at all three clinics.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for a skin cancer check?
No, our practice does not require one. Some insurance plans require one for coverage. Call (907) 267-5890 and we will check your plan.
How often should I have a skin exam?
It depends on your risk. People with a history of skin cancer, many or unusual moles, a family history of melanoma, or a weakened immune system usually need regular checks. Your dermatology provider will recommend a schedule.
What happens if my biopsy shows skin cancer?
We review the pathology report with you and explain the options for that specific cancer, such as Mohs surgery, excision, GentleCure or a prescription cream. If you were diagnosed elsewhere, bring or fax your pathology report and we will take it from there.
Is GentleCure available at every clinic?
GentleCure is offered at our Wasilla clinic. Mohs surgery is performed at all three clinics.
